Our Mission Statement
The American Medical Student Association is committed to improving health care and healthcare delivery to all people; promoting active improvement in medical education; involving its members in the social, moral and ethical obligations of the profession of medicine; assisting in the improvement and understanding of world health problems; contributing to the welfare of premedical and medical students, interns, residents and post-MD/DO trainees; and advancing the profession of medicine.
How can AMSA help you?
Preparing for medical school will likely be one of your most challenging experiences to date, and AMSA can help! AMSA is committed to providing premedical students the tools they need to prepare them for the rigors of medical school. Our website features helpful sections such as “Medical School Survey Results”, “Writing a Personal Statement”, “Charting a Course to Medical School” and much more. We have benefits that help make your life a little easier, like discounts on insurance, rental cars, hotels and medical instruments. Most importantly, when you join AMSA you become part of a vital force of future physicians who believe that health professionals and patients are partners in the management and maintenance of health and that access to high-quality health care is a right and not a privilege. At AMSA, activism is a way of life, and our motto is, “It Takes More than Medical School to Be a Physician.” Student idealism is transformed into meaningful public service, innovation and institutional change.
Building Leadership Skills
Leadership opportunities abound within AMSA. Local leaders plan exciting activities at their schools and national leadership serve in governance or shake things up as part of our Action Committees and Interest Groups. There are 23 positions reserved exclusively for premedical students. There is opportunity for an active, visionary member to help shape the course of the organization, medical and premedical education, and the face of medicine in our world today. These opportunities are nurtured and fostered with more than 30 Leadership Institutes across the country and sessions on leadership at our annual convention and regional conferences.
And, speaking of Annual Convention and Regional Conferences…
AMSA’s annual convention is typically held mid-March in cities such as Washington DC, Chicago, Anaheim, etc. It is an outstanding opportunity to meet with fellow premedical students while listening to some of the leaders in medicine today as they share their stories, struggles, discoveries and triumphs. And, if annual convention is just a little too far for you to attend, 5 Regional Conferences spread out across the country each fall bring the same excitement and opportunities to a more local level! There are always sessions designed specifically for premedical students.
Together, We’ll Make a Difference!
AMSA is committed to improving health care and healthcare delivery to all people. We have comprehensive resources for organizing and executing strategic campaigns to enact change and make our voices heard, but there have to be enthusiastic people who are willing to get involved and are determined to make that change happen. Join AMSA and find out if that person is you!
