Forest Resources Management

Program Info: The Forest Resources Management program prepares students for an active role in the management of forests. The curriculum emphasizes the management of land for production of timber and wood products with consideration given to other forest values such as wildlife habitat, recreational opportunities and water quality. Students gain a clear understanding of how social and economic goals can be met while maintaining the long-term productivity of forested lands. Accredited by the Society of American Foresters, and recognized as a Program of Excellence by the West Virginia University Board of Trustees, this is one of the few baccalaureate programs in the nation that emphasizes the management of Appalachian hardwood forests.

Overall, the curriculum is designed to provide the needed blend of scientific, technical, and managerial knowledge professionals need to manage public or private forest resources. Elective hours are used to develop additional professional competence in specialized areas. A required six-week summer field practice, as well as laboratories in several courses, provide ample opportunities to gain field experience.
